Although the story itself made the seven-year old little girl in pigtails long to be something bigger, it was the communications technology that made the biggest impact. “Someday the telephone will become obsolete,” she thought to herself (and yes, she did, in fact, say “obsolete,” too — she always did love the English language). “Someday, we will ALL communicate through weird devices and machines, with holograms and video — and I’m going to live on Tatooine and marry Han Solo.”
Although she never made it to Tatooine or marry Han Solo, Hong does find satisfaction that the world of communications has transformed into a social media culture, allowing millions of people to share their experiences through computer interfaces, video and a bevy of social media networks. And this is what excites her — the power to create an idea, use her storytelling and instantly dispurse the message to potentially millions of people all over the world.
